More for Gatorade Replay

A lot of you are on Brophy's Facebook page so this might be old news. Brophy's 1989-1990 Soccer team worked long and hard to become a Gatorade Replay team. Check out the article below posted to Brophy's Facebook page. Save the date and come out to support Brophy v. Marcos on May 8th at 7pm at the new Brophy Sports Campus.

Bootcamp started...
For what? You might ask. It was 1990 and the State Championship Soccer Title was on the line. Brophy battled Marcos de Niza high school. Back then, the AIA rules on soccer would make any true Football fan crazy.

Co-Champions...seriously? That's the way it was. The teams came off the field ready for penalty kicks, unaware that the game was already over. The AIA rules stated that in the event of a tie, there would be co-Champions. To even write that makes me cringe.

Would Arsenal stand to be co-Champions with ManU?

The stage is set though. Brophy will take on Marcos de Niza again...in a REMATCH! Yes, the Brophy men from the 1990 team have fought long and hard to make this dream come true in the Gatorade Replay at the new Brophy Sports Campus on Saturday -May 8th at 7p with Brian Wendel '92 leading the charge. All proceeds will benefit the Paul Micheletti Memorial. Paul Micheletti was the beloved coach of 1990 soccer team, who lost his life in a car accident the year after.

Horizon Game Summary

The Broncos stepped onto Loyola Field for their 2009-2010 season home opener against Horizon High School on Tuesday night. After the JV squad handily took care of the Huskies with a 7-1 thumping, spirits were high with the varsity members. The first 15 minutes presented a hurried, frantic period for both teams as the Broncos tried to settle into their new 4-3-3 formation. As the game began to settle down, the team found their form and came close to opening the game twice with near misses from Esteban Obregon and Sean Ayers. The team's persistence in the Horizon defensive third finally paid off midway through the first half when freshman Clarence Clark lofted a ball to the top of the 18 yard box to Esteban Obregon. Obregon's one touch pass found Taylor Ahrensdorf who placed an elegantly struck full volley into the back of the net. The Broncos headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The second half proved to be a dominating display by the Broncos. The Huskies were having trouble dealing with the speed of Obregon and Ayers up front, as well as being outnumbered throughout the midfield. The tired Huskies conceded 3 goals in the opening 15 minutes, the first of which came off a fantastic solo effort from Taylor Ahrensdorf who beat several defenders and the goalkeeper to secure his brace. Ahrensdorf continued to impress his will on the game, being involved as the provider for the 3rd and 4th goals. He found teammate Sean Ayers on both occasions who was able to supply the finishing touch. The final quarter hour saw a first for Brophy soccer, as 5 freshman were on the field at the same time for the varsity squad: Ian Poblete, Jonathan Zabasajja, Ryan Grotjohn, Clarence Clark, and Justice Kelly. Even with these rookies on the field, the Broncos were still able to retain a clean sheet, and prove dangerous going forward.

It was a good opener for the Broncos, who look forward to a difficult clash against Salpointe on Friday (12/04) evening at 6pm.

1st H - 1-0 2nd H - 3-0 Final - 4-0

Brophy Goals: 22' T. Ahrensdorf (E. Obregon, C. Clark) 46' T. Ahrensdorf 52' S. Ayers (T. Ahrensdorf) 60' S. Ayers (T. Ahrensdor)

Salpointe Game Summary

Friday (12/4) the Broncos stepped onto Loyola field for their second regular season match against the Salpointe Lancers. The Lancers have always proved to be a difficult program to play, and this match would continue that trend. The JV Broncos displayed a dominating performance, but failed to execute in front of the net, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The Varsity side would have to do better to find a hole in the Lancers defense, and they nearly did just 15 minutes into the first half as Ben Anderson (Sr) played Sean Ayers (Jr) through on goal. Ayers having only the keeper to beat, put the ball just wide of the far post. On 25 minutes senior Brian Hines came off the bench to boost the offense and bring the Broncos to full strength. Shortly after, however, the Lancers were able to find the back of the net off a fortunate bounce that found its way behind the Brophy defense and into the goal. Brophy pressed through the rest of the first half, but were unable to unlock Salpointe.

The second half proved to be much of the same. The Brophy midfield, composed of Ben Anderson (Sr), Graham Smith (Sr), and Chad Ahrensdorf (Soph) moved the ball around the Lancers at will. Substitute Jonathan Zabassaja (Fr) was sent down the line as an attacking defender and played several ball across the Salpointe goalmouth. One of Zabasajja's crosses found Esteban Obregon (Jr) at the far post, but he was unable to steer it across the line. Brophy continued to press for the remainder of the game, and an opportunity presented itself with only a couple of seconds left on the clock. A cross was floated over the Salpointe box and fell to junior Sean Ayers. The shot went high and time expired.

It was a dominating performance for the Broncos, who were unfortunate not to cash in on one of their numerous opportunities. The Broncos will regroup and ready themselves for the Ridge Cup beginning Monday (12/7) against Shadow Mountain at Loyola Field, 6pm.

1st H - 0-1 2nd H - 0-1 Final - 0-1

Brophy Goals: NONE

P.O.G. - Chad Ahrensdorf (1)

Brophy Beats Tucson Sunnyside 2-1
Brophy came back against a suprisingly good Tucson Sunnyside team to win 2-1. Sunnyside was first to score with an impressive goal coming through some combination work by their midfield and forwards. The Broncos, not to be outdone, came back in just a few short minutes and equalized due to an amazing volley from Junior Forward Esteban Obregan. After bringing the match even, Senior Forward Brian Hines got the ball only 3 minutes after the first Bronco goal and scored an amazing breakaway goal. The match continued hard fought, but in the end the Broncos came away with the win. Since the match is a friendly no win or loss is recorded, and goals are not counted.
